Exploring the "Tenth Island" Full Day Nordeste

A Day Through the Secrets of Nature

Starting around 8:30am, with pick-up at your accommodation, this experience invites you to explore the wild and lesser-known heart of São Miguel Island. Over the course of about 8 to 10 hours, we cross volcanic landscapes, dense vegetation, remote parishes and the most breathtaking viewpoints on the northeast coast.

The first stop is at Pico Vermelho, one of the main geothermal energy points on the island, located in its center. From here, we follow dirt trails on the Tondela Trail, crossed by streams and lush vegetation until we reach Monte Escuro, a remote mountain surrounded by pine forests, where tranquility reigns.

The morning continues with a visit to the emblematic Gorreana Tea Factory, where you can learn about the centuries-old tea traditions of the Azores and taste different infusions, overlooking the plantations that stretch all the way to the sea.

We then go up to the Salto do Cavalo Viewpoint, one of the highest points on the island, with an impressive view of Lagoa das Furnas and the picturesque parish that surrounds it.

We cross the southeast of the island to Vila da Povoação, the settlement town of São Miguel, where we will take a break for coffee and a stroll.

Following the iconic and remote dirt road of Tronqueira, one of the most remote trails on the island (always subject to terrain conditions), we climb up to the Pico da Vara lookout, the highest point on São Miguel,

🛈 Note: In case of impassability on Tronqueira, or due to participant preference, we will follow an equally stunning alternative route along the northeast coast, passing by viewpoints such as:

– Ponta da Madrugada, where the sea meets the sky in a poetic setting;

– Ponta do Sossego, surrounded by gardens and dramatic cliffs;

– View of Barcos and Ponta do Arnel, with views of the lighthouse and the ocean;

– and the Northeast Forest Reserves, where you can walk among endemic species and ancient trees.

The lunch break takes place between 12:30 pm and 2 pm, in a traditional restaurant in the municipality of Nordeste, where you can taste authentic flavors of the Azores.

In the afternoon, we visit the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Waterfall, one of the most beautiful on the island, surrounded by a natural park with old water mills, before beginning our return to Ponta Delgada along the regional road, crossing the typical parishes of the Nordeste municipality.

Around 5:30pm – 6:30pm this fascinating journey ends, with drop-off back at the place where the experience began.
